Costa Brava. Surroundings: Tossa de Mar is a jewel of a resort on Spain’s wild and rugged Costa Brava. It's a quaint and lovely place neighbouring one of the more lively and well-known resorts, Lloret de Mar! In Tossa there are strictly no high-rise buildings, so the stunning views remain unspoilt. Here is a certain ambience that draws people back year after year. Tossa de Mar is one of the beautiful fishermen's villages on the Costa Brava, that has better preserved its character. You will find three main beaches. The Tossa Beach, in front of downtown, El Codolar, behind the walls; and La Mar Menuda on the other side of the bay. The most beautiful area in Tossa de Mar is the medieval neighbourhood inside the old walls, the Vila Vella. Walking along these narrow streets is a pleasure difficult to describe. Tourists from all over the world come to this unique town to enjoy a day of visual pleasure. One finds small businesses, supermarkets, banks, bars, restaurants and Cafes that are open throughout the whole year. The resort Tossa de Mar has a Roman origin. At the beginning of the 20th century, ruins of the old Roman walls were discovered inside the walled town. Ruins of houses were also discovered in other parts of the city. The current walls date from the 12th century. There used to be five towers. Only three have been preserved: the Homage Tower, the Entrance Tower and the Jonas Tower. Here Costa Brava has not been destroyed with the construction of high apartments buildings and hotels. The mountains that surround the old town of Tossa de Mar still show the green of its dry forests. To get to Tossa de Mar you have to drive for more than 20 minutes along a winded road. Painters, sculptors and writers from different European countries came to Tossa de Mar to share their ideas about art and culture. Marc Chagall, Georges Kars, Andre Mason among other foreign artists appreciated the unique atmosphere of the town. Climate: The summer season is warm and sunny in Tossa de Mar, starting from the month of August and ending in the month of September. Temperatures in these months average at 17C to 25C. The warmest months in Tossa de Mar are July and August as temperatures in these months reach 28C. The coldest month in Tossa de Mar is January when average temperatures are at 13C during the day and 3C during the night. The humidity ratio in winter is very low, in winter the sunshine hours average at around 5 hours per day. Things to do in Tossa de Mar: For those of you who want to do something other than spend your time lazing on one of the gorgeous beaches, people-watching over a glass of wine in one of the street-side bars, or enjoying a refreshing swim in your private swimming pool, there is a whole host of things to get stuck into! Tossa de Mar may not be as lively as next-door Lloret de Mar but there's still plenty to see and do with a wealth of water sports and leisure activities and some great excursions and day trips to enjoy. About 30 kilometres south of Tossa is the Marineland complex with dolphin, sea lion and parrot shows, water slides, a reptile house, children's zoo and boating lake. Free transport to both water parks is available from the centre of Lloret. Also topping the "must see" list is the Benedictine Monastery in the awe-inspiring mountains of Montserrat, north west of Barcelona. That city is also well worth a visit with its fabulous Gaudi architecture, famous fountains and Las Ramblas walkway packed with street stalls and outdoor cafes. The surrounding natural environment also makes Tossa an ideal place from which to practice mountain-biking, hiking, or easy walks through the mountains. It is a paradise for those who love to explore nature! The nightlife is formed of enjoyable little bars and is not at all boisterous, with only two discos neatly tucked away into the background.
