Surroundings: At Blanes on the Costa Brava, the luminous sandy beaches, the steep rocks and the town combine to form a very beautiful scene. Blanes has more than four kilometres of coastline, offering a variety of beaches including S’Abanell, the longest beach of the Costa Brava. The beaches are well-maintained. Fresh sand is brought in when needed, and during the night cleaning crews remove garbage, leaving behind a freshly-raked beach. The water quality at Blanes beaches is consistently good, and within Blue Flag standards. Families with small children, as well as people unable to swim, should realize that just into the water most beaches shelf steeply. Life guard stations are manned from July 1st through September 12th. Blanes is located only 4 km away from Lloret de Mar, with 21.000 inhabitants is the opposite of Lloret de Mar and has been able to preserve its charm. The old town was spared from hotel buildings to a large extent and the beach mile at Passeig Abanell is available to the bathers. An alternation is guaranteed with a stroll through the old town and the visit of some impressive sights: for example the hexagonal Gothic fountain's at the Carrer Ample or the church Santa Maria (with the impressive baroque altar from the 14th century), that thrones as a landmark above the old town. The promenade ends in the north at a headland where you can find the ruins of the Castell de Sant Joan (11th century) on a hill. One has a marvellous view from there. Climate: The weather in Blanes is typical for a Catalonian coastal town. The region enjoys the hot summers and mild winters of the Mediterranean climate. Rainfall is slightly higher than in southern Spain, as you will see by the green landscape of the Costa Brava, not to mention the lush botanical gardens near Blanes. Things to do in Blanes: The beaches here are award winning and the calm sea lends itself to boat trips and sailing. The weather provides fantastic opportunities for the wide range of diving and water sports available. For sports lovers, Blanes has a sports pavilion and several private clubs and centres offering all kinds of sports including squash, go-carting parasailing, tennis, hockey on roller skates (not for the faint hearted!), martial arts and indoor and outdoor football. Night life is also vibrant especially for people who wish to attend lively shows, and because of the Blanes numerous nights clubs you’ll have difficulty in selecting. If you're a nature lover, a visit to the resort's botanical gardens is a must. The Mar i Murtra Gardens were founded in 1924 and are now home to 4,000 plant species including important collections of cacti from the arid regions of Central and South America. There's a freshwater pond with a variety of aquatic plants and special sections devoted to poisonous, aromatic and medicinal plants. While staying there don’t forget to visit all the famous sites: the Montserrat Monastery and its abbey, Girona and its old district, a few kilometres away the Dali museum in Figueras and of course Barcelona!
